Visiting for a tournament at the Multiplex, a wedding, or a house-hunting weekend? Grimes has two hotels of its own on the Gateway Drive corridor, with more a short drive away in Urbandale and Johnston.
Grimes has two hotels, both off Gateway Drive near Highway 141 and I-35/80: the Tru by Hilton Grimes Des Moines (701 NE Gateway Dr) and the Red Lion Inn & Suites Grimes by Sonesta (251 Gateway Circle, 515-986-9900). The Red Lion is the property that travel sites still list as AmericInn by Wyndham Grimes. The Grimes Chamber's lodging list shows no other hotels inside city limits.
701 NE Gateway Dr. It opened in fall 2025, and the Greater Des Moines Partnership's listing places it next to the Grimes sports complex. Travel listings show an indoor pool, a fitness room, breakfast included, and pets allowed for a fee, with check-in at 3 p.m. and check-out at 11 a.m. Book through Hilton and confirm the amenities and pet rules there, since listing sites do not always agree.
251 Gateway Circle, 515-986-9900. Sonesta's page lists an indoor heated pool, hot tub, sauna, fitness center, laundry, a business center, and one meeting room. Complimentary continental breakfast runs 6 to 9 a.m. daily, and the on-site IOWA bar serves made-to-order breakfast and finger food. Check-in is 3 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m. Guests must be 21 to rent a room, and children 11 and under stay with a parent at no extra charge.
Searches for "AmericInn by Wyndham Grimes" land on the same building at 251 Gateway Circle. Sonesta's own page now calls it the Red Lion Inn & Suites Grimes, though booking sites such as Expedia and Hotels.com still carry the older AmericInn name in places. If a reservation confirmation mentions either name, check that the address is 251 Gateway Circle.
The Hy-Vee Multiplex at 1000 NE Heritage Dr hosts soccer, baseball, and softball tournaments on weekends, and both Grimes hotels are a short drive away. See the sports complexes guide and the Multiplex's weekend schedule, then book early for big weekends.
