The Grimes Brief

About the Brief

What The Grimes Brief is, and who it is for.

The Grimes Brief is a free local newsletter and website for Grimes, Iowa. We started it for a simple reason: what you need to know about this town is scattered across Facebook pages, city PDFs, school district sites, and word of mouth, and nobody had put it in one place. So we did. One short email on Monday mornings, plus a growing library of local guides, so you can stop digging and just decide.

The short version

A free, independent weekly briefing for Grimes, Iowa. It lands in your inbox every Monday at 7 AM, and everything on this site is free to read. We write it for the people who live here, not for an algorithm.

How it works

The email goes out every Monday at 7 AM, and we build it to read in about five minutes. Reading it costs nothing, and there is no account or paywall. Between issues, this site holds more than 60 local guides and a few tools we made to answer the questions we kept asking ourselves: where to eat tonight, what to do this weekend, who picks up the trash, what the school lunch costs, and the practical stuff about living here. Our guides list their sources and when they were last updated.

Independent and local

The Grimes Brief is independent. It is not part of a newspaper chain, a TV station, or an out-of-state media company, and nobody tells us what to cover. It stays deliberately behind the scenes: this is about Grimes, not about us. We built it for the people who pay attention to this town: new families deciding where to land, longtime residents keeping tabs on what is changing, and everyone who just wants to know what is for dinner and what is going on this weekend.

Grimes is split between Polk and Dallas counties, and the schools are mostly Dallas Center-Grimes, so we cover the pieces of each that a Grimes resident actually runs into. We also publish sibling Briefs for other central Iowa towns, but this one is about Grimes.

So how is it free for readers? Local sponsors. When a business sponsors the Brief, we label it clearly as sponsored, and it does not change what we write or what we recommend. The words are ours.

How we handle facts

We work from real, checkable local information: city and county websites, school district pages, official records, and firsthand local knowledge. When we are not sure about something, we leave it out or say so instead of guessing. And if we get something wrong, we want to fix it, fast. Email us and we will.
