The Grimes Brief

Getting around Grimes without a car: the honest picture.

This one matters if you are moving here without a car, so we will be straight about it: Grimes is a drive-everywhere town, more so than it used to be.

The short version

DART no longer serves Grimes. Des Moines Area Regional Transit ended all Grimes service at the end of June 2025 after the city withdrew from DART. There is no fixed-route bus in town today.

What changed

DART service ended in 2025

Through mid-2025, Grimes had a DART park-and-ride and an on-call neighborhood shuttle. Those ended on June 30, 2025, along with DART paratransit trips starting or ending in Grimes. DART directed former paratransit riders to HIRTA (the Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency) for future rides.
