The Grimes Brief

Guide · Pets

A Grimes pet owner's starter guide: vets, licensing, and the shelter.

New in town with a dog or cat? Here is where to find a vet, how pet licensing works, and who to call about a stray, all in one place.

The short version

Grimes has three veterinary clinics in town. The city runs pet licensing, and animal services for the metro are handled by the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

The practical stuff

Licensing and the shelter

The City of Grimes handles pet licensing, worth doing both because it is required and because the city uses licensing data when weighing amenities like a future dog park. For lost pets, strays, or animal welfare concerns, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa is the metro's main shelter and animal-services provider. Note: Grimes does not yet have a public off-leash dog park; see our dog parks guide for the nearest options.
